Georeferencing Method
Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Assumed that the cardinal direction given in this locality description was wrongly transcribed or inaccurate because a point 7 km SE from the city of Belmonte would be found in the ocean. Since other collections by this collector on the same & similar dates are described as S, W, or SW from the city, could not infer the correct direction for this locality; therefore georeferenced to 7 km (no direction) from the city of Belmonte, in Mun. Belmonte, Bahia. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the city of Belmonte. Using Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs, found coordinates for the approximate geographic center of the city. Using Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) again, found the linear extent of the city of Belmonte by measuring from the selected coordinates near the center of the city to the farthest extent of the city. Input coordinates, offset distance (7 km), linear extent (1.11401 km), measurement error (0.0005 km), and distance precision (1 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: Offset only, no direction).
