  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Because the location of this collection is expressed as a measurement from two different starting points along BR 367, and when those distances are measured along the road in their respective directions they converge almost exactly on the same spot, it was assumed that a successful georeference could be calculated using only one of the two sets of instructions; chose the instruction involving the shorter distance (6 km de Porto Seguro), because it was assumed to be more accurate than the description involving a much farther distance. Therefore, georeferenced to 6 km to the W along BR-367 from the center of the city of Porto Seguro, in Mun. Porto Seguro, Bahia. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, and a paper map of the area (Superintendência do Desenvolvimento do Nordeste. "Porto Seguro" [Map]. Mapas da Região Nordeste do Brasil – 1:100,000. Convênio SUDENE – Governo do Estado da Bahia. SUDENE, Recife, PE, Brasil. 1977) located the city of Porto Seguro, and selected the point along BR 367 closest to the approximate geographic center of the city of Porto Seguro according to the boundaries shown on the paper map (-16.4420124 -39.0631771), which are more likely to accurately portray the center and span of the named place at the time of collection, in 1978. Beginning at the point along BR-367 closest to the approximate geographic center of the city of Porto Seguro (-16.4341094 -39.0948486), used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure approximately 6 km (5.99997 km) along BR-367 in the westward direction. Using Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs, found coordinates for the offset. Using Distance Measurement Tool again, found the linear extent of the starting location of the offset, the city of Porto Seguro, by measuring from the selected coordinates along BR-367 near the center of the city to the farthest extent of the city. Input coordinates, linear extent (2.92248 km), measurement error (0.0005 km), and distance precision (1 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: Offset along a path).
