    6' below surface, overlain by a 6" bed of freshwater marl. Resting on late Wisconsin drift.

  • Description

    Compacted into a 2" bed. "The available leaves were the ratio of length & width of var. cyclophyllotum (Holz.) Grout, but the cell shape of alar group, cells between alar & the costa, & median cells were those of Calliergon giganteum (Schimp.) Kindb. I assumed it was a young or small kind of C. giganteum. The auricular cells are sharply delimited, costa is broad and strong, leaf apices are obtuse & cucullate." -WHW.

    The sample is thought to be on the same horizon as a spruce stump which was dated 11,480 ± 300 years before present.
