Tree-like shrub branched near top of plant, with sarsaparilla odor; leaves
broadly ovate-elliptic with oblique base, one side overlapping the petiole;
spikes erect at anthesis, curved, becoming pendant in fruit; bracts
crescent-shaped, densely fimbriate; fruits rounded, glabrous
