Stems several, slender, .50 to .75 in. thick, to 8
ft., spiny and mostly covered with spiny
sheaths. Leaves variable in spinosity and length
of petiole. Pinnae in groups, very graceful, dark
glossy green above, slightly paler and glossy
below. Fruit bright red when mature. Readily
distinguished by black spines, graceful habit.
Fruit 13-15 ml. x 10-12 m. with cupule yellow.
Costa Rica: LIMON: Woodlands south of La Lola
on the railroad.
Elevation: ca. 120 m.
