RUTACEAE Zanthoxylum americanum Mill. Fenale.
Shrub 2.5 m. tall, 4 cm. in diameter, in shaded fence-
row between cultivated fields, a couple of other indi-
viduals here, probably a clone but not forming dense
clonal thickets as they do in nearby unshaded pasture
slopes. With Carya ovata, Prunus serotina, Ulmus
americana (recently dead from Dutch Elm Disease).
Foliage much greener and appearing more healthy than
on female plants in nearby unshaded pasture slopes;
leaves with a slightly rank aromatic odor. Fruit wall
with a very strong lemony aroma, bright red; seed shiny
black.
