Colony on SE-facing slope, at edge of cultivated field
(below) and young woods (above) of Ulmus americana,
Populus tremuloides, Juglans nigra, Tilia americana, Carya
ovata, with Rubus occidentalis. The maximum size for the
species here, 5 m. tall, 7.5 cm in diameter, 15 years old;
voucher for wood specimen, MADw. The ones in the
understory of adjacent woods are more or less thriving but
do not form dense patches, are less densely branched, and
not over 2 m. tall or 2 cm. in diameter. Staminate; the
flowers not conspicuous, and easily falling after anthesis,
thus the herbarium specimens look nearly sterile.
