Hwy. J, Button Bluff, NE of Button Cemetery.

Wisconsin River valley at base of bluffs, nearly flat cultivated
fields, the soil somewhat sandy. Tree growing up in fencerow
under planted trees of Pinus strobns, P. resinosa, with Prunns
serótina, Zanthoxylum americanum.
Tree 18 cm. in diameter, 22 years old; bark furrowed; sap
milky; sapwood pale; heartwood yellowish tan and remaining
so when dried where not exposed to air; freshly cut surfaces
turning deep reddish brown and remaining so. Voucher for
wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw.
Expanding leaves on the more exposed twigs have been killed
by an unusually late freeze. Pistillate and flowering, the
staminate individuals in the vicinity are blooming at this time.
