  • Description

    Pileus 4-7 cm broad, dry, subvelutinous and shallowly pitted, convex with acute to subpapillate umbo, with even, non-projecting margin, red brown (8D7,6; 9D7,6) when young, developing clay colored (5C-D5) areas from umbo toward margin and on ridges surrounding pits, very minutely areolate with age and then ±uniformly clay colored. Flesh pale yellow, up to 1 cm deep, not changing. Tubes deeply depressed around stipe, up to 15 mm deep, unchanging when young, bright yellow (2A7,6) when young, greenish yellow (2B6) with age and bruising greenish; pores concolorous and staining as tubes, angular ±1 mm broad. Stipe 9-15 cm long, 5-10 mm broad, ±long subclavate, fibrous and solid, strict or curved, pruinose ridged, especially above, matted below toward base, uniformly red brown (9D7-9E7) except with a white base; interior solid, white below, pale yellow toward apex, unchanging.
