Very steep S-facing bluff of Wisconsin River valley, with dry
prairie heavily invaded by Juniperus virginiana and a few J.
communis var. depressa and Populus grandidentata.
Tree 8 m. tall, 30 cm. in diameter, the trunk tapering in the
lower part, fluted from the persistent living or dead lateral
branches; bark stringy. Voucher for wood specimens at Kw,
Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw. Wood specimen from a
horizontal lower branch* 13x8 cm, 68 years old and more or
less as old as the tree. Wood very aromatic when freshly cut
and later after dried, much more aromatic than J. communis
var. horizontalis; sapwood light tan, sharply distinct from the
purple heartwood. Drying wood specimens forming white
crystals on the surface. “Fruit” blue-glaucous.
