Rosaceae Primus serótina Ehrh.
det. M. Nee, 2010
NEW York State, Bronx Co., Bronx, along Mosholu
Parkway, parkland between the parkway and the street E
Mosholu Parkway S.
40°52’13”N, 73°52’52”W. alt. 21 m.
This area contained a grove of Fraxinus americana which
contracted the “ash decline” in the mid 1980s, and the trees
died and were removed. It was replaced by spontaneous
growth of Prunus serótina (the most common species, and a
common native species in the area), Zelkova serrata, Celtis
occidentalis, Morns alba.
Tree 15 m. tall, 30 cm. in diameter. Abundant fruit, the ripe
ones easily dislodged, glossy black, 0.9-1.0 cm in diameter,
juicy and bitter, not edible. Inflorescences with a mixture of
immature reddish fruits and ripe black ones, apparently
ripening at random on the raceme, not acropetaly as is the
case with the flowers.
