ROSACEAE Prunus serótina Ehrh.
Tree 12 m. tall, 40 cm. in diameter; bark dark, gray-
black, the conspicuously lenticellate young bark breaking
up into flakes, orange where broken. Twigs with bitter
taste. Leaves shiny on both sides, dark green above,
light green below.
Flowers with light musty fragrance. Petals white;
hypanthium light greenish inside and outside, but orange
within when flowers first open.
With two other trees of this species and Ulmus
americana, road bank along Hwy. 14, a common native
species in the area.
WISCONSIN: Richland Co., 3 miles SE of Richland Center.
