ROSACEAE Prunus americana Marsh Bushy shrubs, in clonal patches, 3-4.5 m. tall; stems 5-10 cm. in diameter; bark dark gray, almost black; with numerous stiff, sharp spiniform branches. Nearly the whole shrub in flower; leaves just beginning to expand. Pedicel green; flowers with musty sweet fragrance, some of the fragrance persisting on dried specimens at least until Aug. 27, 1976; hypanthium pink, sepals green; petals white; filaments mostly white but pinkish at base; anthers yellow; style pale green. Common, apparently several clones, along fencerow between cultivated fields and remnant prairie along rail- road.
