Bixa orellana
Basin of Rio Morona, Rio Mangosiza. Mission of
Miazal, 45 km ESE of Sucua (by air) ca. 2°37fS,
77°38'W. Undulating terrain, soils sandy. Elev. ca.
300 m. Beside church at Miazal, in cleared area, but
seen in primary and secondary forest as well.
Tree to 3-5m, branching at lm. Bark gray and
smooth, fruit growing in clusters, almond-shaped, 3cm
long, spiny. Intense orange-colored sap in fruit.

Principal interest: Fruit used as part of treat-
ment for lesions resembling oral carcinoma (see
CFL100). Also, secondary sources list many uses
including treatment of non-specific swelling (solid
tumor?), viral syndrome (varicella?), GI complaints.
