THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN MEDICINAL PLANTS OF ECUADOR Prov. Morona Santiago No. 104 Bixaceae Bixa orellana Basin of Rio Morona, Rio Mangosiza. Mission of Miazal, 45 km ESE of Sucua (by air) ca. 2°37fS, 77°38'W. Undulating terrain, soils sandy. Elev. ca. 300 m. Beside church at Miazal, in cleared area, but seen in primary and secondary forest as well. Tree to 3-5m, branching at lm. Bark gray and smooth, fruit growing in clusters, almond-shaped, 3cm long, spiny. Intense orange-colored sap in fruit. N.V.: achiote (Spanish) ipiaku (Shuar) C. F.
