TENNESSEE, Cumberland Co., 4.8 km NW of center of
Rockwood, along gravel road, nearly beneath the overpass of
1-40. 35°53’45”N, 84°43’38”W. alt. 430 m.
Disturbed young forest; along gravel road, Pinus strobus, P.
virginiana, Sassafras albidum, Cornus florida, Quercus
alba, Carya, Acer rubrum, Rhus copallina, Liriodendron
tulipifera, Tsuga canadensis, Ilex opaca.
Type locality of Pinus strobus L. ssp. cumberlandensis Silba,
A large cone subspecies of Pinus strobus L. from its southern
ranges and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Journal of the
International Conifer Preservation Society 18: 11-12. 2011.
Common tree in this woods, up to 60 cm. in diameter, and
in all sizes with good reproduction. Very few old cones
found on the ground, and these from several trees, perhaps
even from the type tree (8 measured: 7.6, 9.4, 9.7, 10.1, 10.2,
12.1, 12.4, 14.8 cm). Leaves from a sapling at edge of
clearing, 4.7-10.7 cm long.
