Volcanic ash and gravel with humus.
Montane conifer forest with Tsuga mertensiana,
Pseudotsuga, Abies amabilis. Fruits red, fleshy, edible,
sweet, mucilaginous; locally common bushy-branched
dwarf shrub 0.3 m tall; young stems green.
