shale, with Quercus coccinea, Q. montana, Q. rubra, Pinus, Tsuga, Kalmia latifolia, Rhododron, Betula,
Prunus, Acer rubrum, Vaccinium. Common understory shrub, 2-3 dm tall, rhizomatous, leaves green
both sides, margins with tiny glandular teeth, mostly past flower, petals deep pink, infl. below leaves, fruits
