Companion plants: Pines, oak, occasional hemlock and holly; laurel, witbh-hazel, climbing fern. It is the predominate ground cover all thru the park (Supt. reports that it is on all but 2 mi. of 12 mi. trail). We saw it along 8 mi. of trails on both side of path. Altitude: 16-1800' Soil: Fairly dry, sandy soil with leafmold - often on top of rocky ledges.
