N
INFORMATION CONCERNING 309.
N
This number 309 is an albino fruited form of Gaultheria procum-
bans L.
N
My first collection of it was on Sept. 11, 1958» and it is 1 of
N
my Nantucket collection. Only two sheets of 1 were mounted, one being
deposited in the herbarium of the New York Botanical Garden, the other
in the herbarium of the Museum of Natural Science, Nantucket, Mass#
As I was on vacation when it was first collected, I intended to
collect only enough material as a voucher specimen for my flora of
Martha*s Vineyard and Nantucket Island. However, in collecting it
N
again this year, I did flo purposely in order that a set of 309 could
be deposited at Gray Herbarium, Cambridge, Mass; Canada Department of
Agriculture, Research Branch, Ottawa, Canada; Instituto de Botanico,
Sao Paulo, Brazil; and the New York Botanical Garden.
There are times when I feel that to make types of forms may be
considered definitely as "hair-splitting” - especially albino forms.
However, published data reaches many and enlightens them as to new
discoveries. Therefore, I might consider publishing the data and
information concerning this albino fruited form of Gaultheria procum-
N
bens L., at some future date, in order that the specimens of 309 de-
posited in the herbaria, as mentioned, may be considered as isotypes
N
inasmuch as they do not have representation of 1 specimens.
It might be said that the fruits of the specimens of having
been collected at a later dataware more mature than those of 389.
N
Also, the specimens of 309 were collected from the identical plants
as those of I a year after, thus showing that the form has remained
constant. However, the plants seemed somewhat more robust this year,
probably due to better weather conditions.
