Shrub to small tree 1-4 m tall, sometimes
arising from swollen burl. Floral bracts,
rachis, pedicels, bracteoles, calyx and
lower 3/4 corolla bright red; upper 1/4
corolla pale greenish-white (pale green in
bud). Corolla slightly zygomorphic and
stamen & style appressed to lower surface of
inner corolla. Common. Fruit dark blue-black.
