Description
Pileus 4-10 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, subvelutinous to subtomentose, black to chocolate brown, fading to a pale pinkish brown. Flesh 1-1.5 cm thick, white changing to orange red (8A8), with mild odor and taste. Tubes adnate to adnexed, 8 mm long, white then pinkish flesh color, staining orange red then black; pores concolorous and staining likewise. Stipe 4-6 cm long, 1.5-2 cm broad, equal, dry, subpruinose, white to pinkish orange (7A-B3) at apex, deep purple (13E-F7,6,5) to black toward base; interior white staining red then black.

Despite the purple pigments, this is VERY CLOSE to T. alboater.
