Description
Pileus: 54-90 mm, convex becoming plane, surface finely matted subtomentose, brick red (Methuen 10F8), becoming orange-brown (Methuen 6E8) to brown in age. Margin even. Context white, staining pale red in small, discrete patches when cut. Odor and taste mild. Hymenophore: poroid, depressed around stipe; pores 2-3 per mm; tubes cream-colored (Methuen 4A2-4A3) becoming pale orange (Methuen 5A3-5A4); pore surface (white first?) pinkish-gray (Methuen 8D2 - 8D3), becoming orange-brown (Methuen 6D7) in age. Stipe: 48-77 x 12-17 mm, equal to subclavate, solid, white with dense punctate clusters of brick red (+/- concolorous with young pileus) fibrils. Context white, staining pale reddish then reddish gray (grayer toward outside of stipe). Basal tomentum white, often dense. Macrochemical reactions: All parts negative with NH4OH. Pileus, pileal context, stipe, stipe context, and pores turn pale green with 20% KOH.
