Description
Pileus 2-3.5 cm road, convex to plano-convex, dry, areolate with suberect felty thick squamules with pale ochraceous buff showing between, with squamules black to greenish black. Flesh vivid yellow to chrome yellow (2A8), unchanging, with mild odor and taste. Tubes adnexed, vivid yellow at first, then olive yellow (3C7,6), with pores concolorous, unchanging when bruised/exposed. Stipe 5-9 cm long, 4-8 mm broad, curved, equal to subclavate, sometimes tapered at base, vivid yellow to orange yellow at apex, red to deep red below, becoming pink further below, then white at base, finely fibrillose above, then fibrillose striate to coarsely striate below, covered with coarse squamules that are concolorous with pileus squamules (greener on stipe) on the paler to white stipe base, with interior yellow, unchanging, but some subtle light blue on white base in one. Spores olive brown, smooth, ellipsoid. Reminiscent of Xerocomus mcrobbii McNabb, but pores of the latter are red.
