  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Rio Baraúna within the PARNA Viruá vicinity in Roraima, Brazil. Referred to the ICMBio website (http://www.icmbio.gov.br/portal/biodiversidade/unidades-de-conservacao/biomas-brasileiros/amazonia/unidades-de-conservacao-amazonia/1988-parna-do-virua.html) for the precise location of PARNA Viruá (synonymous with Parque Nacional do Virua). ICMBio provides a shapefile (.kmz) of the boundaries of PARNA Viruá, which may be viewed on Google Earth. Using Google Earth and Google Maps - Satellite View, located Rio Baraúna, a tributary of Rio Anauá. Used the Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line between the mouth of the river (confluence of Rio Baraúna and Rio Anauá) to the farthest extent of the river within the PARNA Viruá vicinity (where Rio Baraúna meets BR-174), then halved this distance to find the midpoint of the line. Chose a point along Rio Baraúna nearest to the midpoint of the line; used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Input coordinates, linear extent (19968.1 m), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
