Georeferencing Method
Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. This locality does not make perfect sense because while Vargem Alta and Cachoeiro de Itapemirim are located somewhat near each other, they are each considered separate municipalities at the present day. However, this is an old collection (1949) and it is conceivable that the boundaries have changed/were not readily apparent to the collector. The most plausible interpretation of the location description is that this collection was made at or near Vargem Alta, which is by far the smaller and least populous of the two different named places on the label, making it safe to assume that place was meant to be the most specific element of the locality directions. Therefore, georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Vargem Alta, in Mun. Vargem Alta, Espírito Santo. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the town of Vargem Alta, and the city of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim. Using Google Maps - Measure Distance tool, estimated linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates at the center of Vargem Alta to the center of the nearest comparable named place, the town of Jaciguá (-20.707527, -41.017704), then dividing that distance by 2. Input linear extent (2113.25 m), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the Uncertainty radius.
