  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Referred to Geonames.net website for location information for Piranhas, along Rio Purus (http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_-5.565_-63.242.html). Georeferenced to the approximate midpoint of Rio Purus between the geographic centers of the shores of Tapauá and Piranha in Amazonas, Brazil. Using the reference map and Google Maps - Satellite View, located Rio Purus, a tributary of Rio Solimões, between the city of Tapauá and the village of Piranhas. Used the Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line along Rio Purus between the geographic centers of the shores of both localities, then halved this distance to approximate the location of the geographic midpoint of this segment of Rio Purus. Measured to approximately this halved distance from one extreme of this segment toward the center; used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the midpoint along Rio Purus between the sites, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Input coordinates, linear extent (5868.98 m), and measurement error (.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
