Large tree, 18 m. tall, 70 cm. in diameter; bark furrowed, the pieces not easily broken off; branches less than 20 cm. in diameter with scaly bark.
Flowering material from lower branches, the male aments hanging, abundant; female flowers few.
SE-facing pasture slope with Carya cordiformis, Ulmus americana, Zanthoxylum americanum.
