Large open-grown tree, 14 m. tall, 1 m. in diameter. Bark hard, furrowed, the young branches smooth and gray, the tops of the long longitudinal ridges flat-topped and also persistently smooth.
About half of this year's crop of acorns has fallen to the ground.
On SW-facing slope, formerly pastured but now brushy and growing up with saplings of species from nearby forest, Juglans nigra, Carya ovata, C. cordiformis, Populus grandidentata, Quercus alba.
