  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. There are multiple bodies of water in Amazonas, Brazil with the name "Arara." The two rivers with the name "Rio Arara" within Amazonas are not in close proximity to Rio Negro, but there is a tributary of Rio Negro named "Igarapé Arara." Assumed Igarapé Arara to be what the locality description is referring to; georeferenced to the approximate geographic midpoint of Rio Negro between the mouths of Igarapé Arara and Rio Cuieiras in Mun. Manaus, Amazonas. Used the Google Maps - Earth View to locate the mouths of Igarapé Arara and Rio Cuieiras, along Rio Negro. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure a straight line between the approximate geographic center of the mouth of Igarapé Arara (confluence of Igarapé Arara and Rio Negro) to the approximate geographic center of the mouth of Rio Cuieiras (confluence of Rio Cuieiras and Rio Negro), then halved this distance to find the midpoint of the line. Chose a point along Rio Negro nearest to the midpoint of the line; used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the midpoint of this segment of Rio Negro, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of this segment of river. Input coordinates, linear extent (12710.0 m), and measurement error (2.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Referencing Guide, Named Place: River, stream, road, path).
