  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Unable to find the precise location of Igarapé Iruçanga; instead, georeferenced to the approximate geographic midpoint of the villages of Pindobal and Porto Novo in Mun. Belterra, Pará, in accordance with similar locality descriptions. Referred to Geonames.org for location information for Porto Novo (http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_-2.623_-54.978.html, accessed: 11/13/2014). Used the reference map and Google Maps - Earth View to locate the villages of Porto Novo and Pindobal, along Rio Tapajós. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure a straight line between the approximate geographic center of Porto Novo and the approximate geographic center of Pindobal, then halved this distance to find the midpoint of the line (midpoint of line is located in Rio Tapajós). Selected a point along the coast of Rio Tapajós nearest to the midpoint of the line (collection assumed to be terrestrial); used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate midpoint between the villages. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farther of the villages. Input coordinates, linear extent (3860.0 m), and measurement error (10 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Between two Places).
