Description
Pileus 5.5-15 cm broad, dry to moist, obtusely convex when young, plano convex with age, tomentose to matted tomentose overall and with age, becoming finely fibrillose to finely areolate with age especially toward margin, brownish orange (7C-D8) when young, browner (6E8-7) with age, sometimes fading to light brown (6C5-4); margin appendiculate when young (sect. Aurantiacum). Flesh white, changing directly to fuscous, up to 3 cm thick. Tubes adnexed to depressed around the stipe, up to 3 cm deep pallid (4A-B3) when young, soon pinkish gray (6B3); pores concolorous when young, changing to 5C4, and finally 5E5 with age, staining near 5E5 when mature, staining ±darker when older. Stipe 8-15 cm long, (1.5)2-3 cm broad near apex, white with white scabers when young; scabers soon darkening to brown to black; ground color frequently becoming pale gray or sometimes with pale yellowish green tints. Blue green stains apparent sometimes especially in the base of the stipe.
