  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to an offset of 10.5 km (midpoint of the offset range) "above," or upstream, along Rio Jaci Paraná, from the city of Jaci Paraná in Porto Velho, Rondônia. Used Google Maps – Earth View to locate the city of Jaci Paraná and Rio Jaci Paraná. Beginning at the approximate geographic center of the shore of Jaci Paraná (at: Praia de Jaci Paraná, -9.255791, -64.393429), used the Google Maps – Measure Distance Tool to measure approximately 10.5 km (10.48 km) upstream (toward the mouth of the river) along Rio Jaci Paraná. Used the Google Maps – What's Here Tool to find the coordinates for the offset, along the shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps – Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent of the starting location, the shoreline of the city of Jaci Paraná, by measuring from the starting coordinates to the farthest extent of the shore of the city (to the confluence of Rio Jaci Paraná and Rio Madeira directly north of Jaci Paraná, under the assumption that the city expands to this location due to lack of other populated places appearing to exist north of the city before said confluence). Input coordinates, coordinate precision (.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), linear extent (5.44 km), measurement error (.01 km), and distance precision (1 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius. Added 1.5 km to the uncertainty radius to account for the added uncertainty of the offset provided in a range format.
