Georeferencing Method
Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Unable to find the precise location of "Parana de Tonantins." Assumed that Rio Tonantins is synonymous with Parana de Tonantins from observations of the location; no other "black" stream-like body of water in vicinity of the city of Tonantins. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Rio Tonantins within Mun. Tonantins, Amazonas. Used the Google Maps - Satellite View to locate Rio Tonantins, a tributary of Rio Solimões. Used the Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line between the mouth of the river (at confluence of Rio Tonantins and Rio Solimões) and the source of the river (approximated through the dense forest cover), then halved this distance to approximate the location of the geographic midpoint of Rio Tonantins. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the midpoint, on the adjacent shore of the river. Input coordinates, linear extent (distance from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of Rio Tonantins, 44480.6 m), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
