On steep, sunny, grassy slope. Vegetation dominated by grasses with open bare areas, subject to cutting and burning. Reddish-orange, rocky soil.

Culms erect, 0.75 cm to 1 (2) m high; florets dark purplish. Common to dominant, mostly past.
