Plant tufted, 5-12 mm. or more high, dark olive brown, bearing below a few long, often secund branches; growth intercalary; branches and main filament 13-20 mic. wide, but little narrowed upwards, not pilate; cells near the growing area one-half to as long as the diameter, increasing upwards to 3-8 times as long as the diameter; plurilocular sporangia ovate, acuminate, 20-35 mic. wide, 55-65 mic. long; zoospores (mega- spores) 6-7 mic. in diameter, sessile or borne on a 1-3 celled stalk 011 the lower part of the main filaments or the branches. a. On leaves of Sargassum echinocarpum and S. cymosum. Waianae, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii. J. E. T. 20 My 1900. b. On Chnoospora fastigiata var. pacifica. Waianae, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii. J. E. T. 17 My 1900. Det. De Alton Saunders. This species is related to Ectocarpus padinse (Buffh.) Sauvageau, but differs from it in being more branched and in the size and shape of the plurilocular sporangia. Only one kind of sporangia are present, the megasporangia of Sauvageau.
