Brazil. Maranhão. In the Rio Balsinha, c. 20 km. from Balsas. [Between municipios Balsas & Sambaíba.].

Growing abundantly in the fairly swift-flowing shallow river. We were told that the plant is a favourite food of cattle which wade in the river to graze on it. Its present profusion is the result of the cattle population of the area having been much reduced recently.
