Rhodochorton rhizoideum var, patens Drew, var.nov,
Univ.Calif.Publ.Bot.14-.183.pl.42.f.45. 4 F 1928.

Filaments rarely branched; branches when present arising
near the surface of the host; cells of the free filaments
shorter than in the type, usually only 1-2 times as long as
wide; pyrenoids fewer in number, 1 or 2 in each cell of the
free filaments, more numerous in the cells of the endophytic
filaments.

Endophytic in the stipe of Cystoseira osmundacea. Carmel,
Monterey County, California. May. Type, Herb. Univ.Calif, no.’
294554 (Gardner, no. 3376). Locality as above.

Although not very unlike R. rhizoideum it has been thought
advisable to consider the material growing on Cystoseira osmund-
acea as a variety on account of the differences mentioned.
