Distribution
iW YORK ?BOTANICAL arden. Membranoptera Weeksiae Setchell & Gardner,sp.nov. Univ.Calif.Publ.Bot.l3;209. pi.19.f.2. 6 U 1926. Fronds 4-8 om. high, 0.5-1.5 mm. wide.profusely branched, "branches of 4-6 orders, all from the margin, arising at about 45 angle; midrib relatively large and conspicuous, becoming decidedly stipitate at the base , lateral veins indistinct or at times absent; margins smooth, entire; cells of the central part of the midrib about twice as long as broad, relatively large; fruit typical of the genus. Growing on rocks in the lower littoral and upper sub- littoral belts. Central California. Type locality pacific Grove. The specimen collected by Mrs. Hall at Santa Barbara and now in the Herb.J. Agardh, no.31826(fide W.A. Setchell) may belong to this species. Delesseria alata C.L. Anderson, Zoe, vol.2, p.224,1891; Howe, Erythea, volfl, p.68,1893. I have not had an opportunity to examine any of the material cited in these two publications and therefore cannot speak with certainty as to the correctness of the synonymy. Several collections of this species have accumulat- ed in the Herbarium of the University of California from various localities along the coast of central California. These have been listed usually as Delesseria alata. Super- ficially they resemble D. alata as found growing on the coast of Europe, but the fronds are much narrower. I have carefully compared the structure with that of a specimen of D. alata distributed by Wyatt, no.14,from Torbay, on the southern coast of England, which is probably as nearly typical of the species as can be had, and found the histo- logical characters to be decidedly different. The midrib of the plant from Torbay is much larger, more complex; the central filaments have cells much wider and many times longer, and the cells of the alae are much smaller than those in our plant.
