Main vegetation types of region: (l) "chapada ", decid-
uous to evergreen xeromorphic tree woodland (”cerra—
dao") on tops & sides of sandstone plateaus & some
low flat land; (2)"tabuleiro", deciduous low-tree
woodland (another type of "cerradao") on tipper parts
of rolling terrain; (3)Mmatan, closed, deciduous to
evergreen forest, in galleries; (^"caatinga11, open
deciduous forest on lower parts of rolling terrain;
(5)wvarjaolt, scattered deciduous forest-type trees
on low flat land; (6) "cocal**, dense babagu palm
groves on Bamaiba River terrace & some brook val-
leys, Dry season 4^-5 months with almost no rain;
brooks intermittent. Annual fires & cattle grazing
in all areas. Some spots with dänse secondary cha-
pada scrub ("carrasco1*); much tabuleiro cleared to
form grassy pasture; much mata, caatinga & varjao
in shifting cultivation.
This habitat: at foot of low plateau to west of trail
from Faz. Morros to Santa Barbara. Open area with
low knolls. Modified nchapadan vegetation with low
trees to 5 m. tall, spaced several meters apart*
Soil 30% covered with grassy clumps & a few herbs
& low shrubs. Soil very pebbly. This n®: GRASS,
clumps a few cm. diam. at base. FI. culms 2-18
per plant.
