Municipio de Loreto: “Ilha de Balsas” region, between the Rios
Balsas and Pamaiba. SANTA BARBARA, due SSE of Loreto, on
shore of Rio Pamaiba. Flat river plain, less than 1 km. wide, several
meters above river level, covered with dense babagu palm grove
Alt. 140 m. 7030’S., 4503^. Ca. 1 km E of “Riacho da Simiana».
Main vegetation types of region: (1) “chapada”, a semi-closed tree woodland for
"cerrad&o”) on flat tops & steep sides of plateaus, — -"-if hlllj lmn and on
some areas of rolling or flat dry land; (2) "tabulelro”, a semi-closed woodland
or cerrad&o , of different physiognomy & species composition, on tons of hliiv
or gently rolling land; (3) "mata”, a closed tropical forest of many tree sDeetes
usually with palms, in flat stream valleys and in or alongside of brook ravines &
courses; (4) “caatinga”, a semi-open forest of few forest tree species on low
moist flat land and in narrow valleys between “tabulelro”-covered hills' (5) "var
j&o”, low moist flat land with scattered forest trees of one or a few mwi«?
(6) "cocal”, thick groves of babacu palm on flat river plain of Bio Pamaiba and
some of its tributary streams yVjjjlUvegetatlon types completely deciduous durtne
dry season. All brooks Intermittent. Annual ground fires and cattle erazim in
all areas. Part of “tabulelro” cut over, forming treeless grassy arear most
“mata” and much "caatinga” & "varj&o” cultivated or abandoned, formlne dens*
secondary vegetation of low trees As tall shrubs (“capoelra”); some MewTt
“chapada" with dense secondary vegetation (“carrasco”). Upland soils etavisir
tan, or light reddish brown silt or silty clay, very stony on slopes; lowland soils
mostly reddish brown to black silt loam, silty clay loam or clay	without
stones. Country rock horizontal light brown sandstone, exposed onlv* on tom
of morros and on cliffs along the Bio Pamaiba.	p‘_
This habitat: on river plain in a weedy planted pasture
of tall grasses. (Original vegetation was a babacu
grove, later, apparently a sugar cane plantation.;
