  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. The river Braço Norte do Rio Jucu (alternative name = Rio Jucu Braço Norte) comes close to highway BR 262 (or short roads branching off from BR 262) at only a few places along its entire length, which are themselves clustered along a short stretch of the road. The meaning of the instructions "BR-262, km 32" was not immediately apparent since none of these places where the two features meet are anywhere close to 32 km along BR 262 from Domingos Martins (my first attempt at interpreting these instructions). However, one small road which branches from BR-262 (-20.373861, -40.586240) and leads directly to a large area of intact habitat along the banks of the Rio Jucu Braço Norte is found at nearly exactly 32 km (31.912 km; measured using Google Maps - Measure Distance tool) along BR-262 from the point where BR-262 begins near the outskirts of the city of Vila Velha/Vitoria, ES (-20.332520, -40.355413). Because of this fact, the point of collection was determined to be in the vicinity of where this unnamed side-road (which branches from BR 262 at 32 km from the start of the road) connects to the valley of the Rio Jucu Braço Norte. Therefore, georeferenced to the point along this specified unnamed side-road which comes closest to the Rio Jucu Braço Norte, in Mun. Domingos Martins, ES. After using the methods already described to find the locality, used Google Maps – What's Here tool to find coordinates (final) for the closest point to the river along the road as discussed. Although, because this collection could have been made as far away as the entrance to this unnamed side road from BR 262, used the straight-line distance from the selected coordinates near the Rio Jucu Braço Norte to the far side of the intersection just specified (-20.373987, -40.586213) as the linear extent. Input linear extent (1064.5 m), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Defined Area).
