    Brazil. Maranhão. Lorêto Mun. "Ilha de Balsas" region, between the Rios Balsas and Parnaíba. About 40 km. south of Lorêto. At place called "Picada", about 300 m. S of the creek, "Riacho da Picada".

  • Habitat

    In gully of small tributary brook (now dry) called "Vao de Estrebaria" cut into the base of a gently-sloped side of a low plateau, where it joins the creek plain. The gully is lined with a narrow low-tree gallery forest.

  • Description

    Tree 10 m tall, slightly inclined over brook bed. Trunk 15 cm diam. Bark ridged. Ripe fruit raspberry red, slightly oblate-spheroidal, from 4.5 cm diam. by 3.5 cm long, to 7.0 cm diam. by 6.0 cm long. Seeds tan, pulp around seeds orange when ripe, with a slightly sweetish taste. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.

daot!) on tops & sides of sandstone plateaus & some

woodland (another type of ncerradao,f) on upper parts
of rolling terrain; (3),,mataH, closed, deciduous to
evergreen forest, in galleries; (^)f,caatingatt, open
deciduous forest on lower parts of rolling terrain;
(5)‘*varjaolf, scattered deciduous forest-type trees
on low flat land; (6)f,cocaltt, dense babagu palm
groves on Pamaiba River terrace & some brook val-
leys. Dry season 4-5 months with almost no rain;
brooks intermittent. Annual fires & cattle grazing
in all areas. Some spots with dense secondary cha-
pada scrub (ncarrascon); much tabuleiro cleared^to
form grassy pasture; much mata, caatinga & verjao
in shifting cultivation.
