    Costa Rica. Cartago. ± 4 km E of km 31 of Interamerican Highway, near town of Palo Verde.

    Mixed forest. Quercus oocarpa. Gregarious. On soil.

  • Description

    P6-15 cm broad, convex to plane, dry, grayish orange (6B4), glabrous and shiny, covered with brown pyramidal volval warts over the disc, with flattened pale brown felty volval warts toward margin, with white minute warts at margin. Flesh white, unchaning , up to 1.5. cm thick, with pungent, unpleasant "old ham" "dirty gym socks" odor, not tasted. Lamellae free, crowded, up to 1.5 cm broad, pale yellow to pale orange (4A4-5A3), with white fimbriate edges; lamellulae truncate. Stipe 8-16 cm long, 1.5 -2.5 cm broad, broadly clavate bulbous (up to 6 cm broad), dry naked on bulb, squamulose scaly above bulb towards annulus, pulverulent above that, assuming pale pink tints above bulb with age and /or handling. Volval remnants floccose, hanging from margin of pileus before partial veil expansion, pale pinkish. partial veil floccose warty on underside, splitting radially , extremely fragile, sometimes disappearing or remaining as partial fragments near stipe apex, occasionally with a thickened free limb. p-Creso (+) red brown throughout except lamellae.
