  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the point along the Pico da Bandeira trail at an elevation of approximately 2667m that is closest to the approximate geographic center of all the areas found at an elevation of 2667m within the Serra Caparaó mountains, along the border between the states of Espírito Santo (Mun. Alegre) and Minas Gerais (Mun. Alto Caparaó). Using Google Maps - Text Search and Terrain View, located Pico da Bandeira, the trail leading up to the peak from two directions, and the point at an elevation of approximately 2667m closest to the center of all the other areas on the mountain at that elevation. Using Google Maps - What's Here tool, found coordinates (final) for that point. Using Google Maps- Measure Distance tool, determined linear extent by measuring from the selected final coordinates to the most distant point at an elevation between 2660m and 2690m (-20.432408, -41.791508; this is to account for limitations in contour-line precision at the highest zoom level in Google Maps - Terrain View). Input linear extent (1698.5 m), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Defined area).
