  • Location Notes

"La Malinche is situated on the boundary between the mexican states of Puebla and Tlaxcala at 19°13'48"N Lat. and 98°01'47"W Long. It forms part of the mountainous belt known as "Eje Volcánico Transversal" which extends from the states of Colima and Nayarit, on the Pacific coast, to Veracruz in eastern Mexico. La Malinche itself is volcanic in origin, inactive at the present and greatly eroded. The main types of rocks seem to be hornblende andesite. Although apparently there are no recent studies on the species composition of the alpine meadow, it seems that the dominant grasses are species of Calamagrostis and Festuca as on the high elevations of Central Mexico. Nos. 2583 (UT, MICH, MEXU, NY) and 2585 (UT, MEX) were collected in the alpine meadow on the N facing slope, i. e. within the state of Tlaxcala". - information supplied by Delgadillo, 19.V.69.
