Bambusa paraguayana (Doell) Bertoloni
Municipio Itajuipe: 2 km south of Pimenteira on road to
Uniâo Queimada. Fazenda Sao Jorge (entered hy Fazenda
Estrela do Sul). Summit of mountain with steep r.lopes, at
500m elev., where rains frequent and generally covered by
mist. Common robust bamboo with culms very close together
in clumps, 12-15m tall, 6-Tcm. diam., the lower nodes
"branching, the branches spiny at each node. New culm leaves
falling entire: sheath yellowish-green with orange-pur-
plish flush, sparsely covered with fine appressed brown
hairs; blade light green with purplish tinge, erect. New
culms filled with water, dark green, smooth, with a small
white band just above and below the node. Split culms of
this bamboo used in constructing mud huts, the nud affixed
to the bamboo skeleton.	5 May 1976
