    Perennial herb, 2.5m tall, with several stems in a clump; stems, petioles and inflorecence rachis pink-purple; stems to 3cm in diameter, coarsely longitudinally lenticillate toward the base; xylem maximum 5mm thick; pith white, coarsely chambered. Inflorescence hanging in fruit and usually so in flower; flowers greenish-white; fruit purple-black, very juicy, depressed-globose, smooth. A common weed, not planted.
