  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Fordlândia, Aveiro. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the approximate area of Fordlândia, which sits along Rio Tapajós. The town of Fordlândia has an interesting history; in 1929 Henry Ford purchased this land in Pará, Brazil in hopes of creating the largest rubber plantation in the world for his automobile company. American-style homes were constructed for the workers very nearby the plantation in a town he named Fordlândia. The attempt was ultimately unsuccessful because the rubber trees suffered from blight and the town was abandoned. Presently, the area primarily consists of subsistence farmers (Bellows, Alan. "The Ruins of Fordlândia." Damn Interesting, 3 August 2006. Accessed 28 October 2013.) Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of Fordlândia. Because the area does not have defined spatial boundaries, used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure from the selected coordinates to the approximate geographic center of the nearest named place, Brasília Legal; halved this distance to approximate the linear extent of Fordlândia. Input coordinates, linear extent (13386.6 m.), and measurement error (.1 m.) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
