Small cultivated street tree; trunk with conical spines, swollen
in middle, contracted at the base and with small buttresses;
this species is very fast-growing and recovers rapidly from even
severe pruning; commonly cultivated in the city and native in
the subtropical semi-deciduous forest of the area. Leafless
branches with abundant flowers, very showy, but many leafy
branches also; individual flowers very showy, with slight odor
of Tulipa. no pollinators observed (but the same species in
Buena Vista visited by several species of long-billed
hummingbirds), planted trees in the city differring slightly in
the deepness of the rose color of the petals; petals rose, with
yellow at base, the base later fading to white; filament column
first pale yellow tinged with rose, then white tinged with rose;
anthers creamy, later brownish between the locules; visible part
of style white; stigma globose, dark red.
