Habitat
In moist, humus-covered, stony soil of densely wooded flats near the river.

Description
Shrubs or becoming tree-like; stem subterete, 8 inches thick, branched form near the base or from below the middle, 15-20 feet high; branches widely spreading and freely rebranched; twigs slender, green; wood ochraceous throughout, bitterish, odorless, quite hard and burly; bark melleus, except the whitish inner side and the smooth, grayish-brown surface; leaves chartaceous, horizontally spreading, with the tips recurved and the veins more or less wavy, much darker green above; flowers in small axillary clusters, pendant; calyx green; petals flavus; ovary green and bearing 4-lobed masses of whitish stigmatic hairs; fruits pendant, obovoidly globose, 3/8 inch across, containing a 2-celled crustaceous, rugose, nearly black seed; epicarp yellowish when mature. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
